Description

Ranitomeya fantastica has smooth or slightly granular skin; ground color black; orange head, with or without black markings, white, gray or blue reticulated legs, chin and throat yellow or orange.
Finger I shorter than finger II when fingers appressed; finger III > II > IV > I. Discs on fingers II, III and IV greatly expanded; disc on finger I small, rounded. No webbing or lateral fringes on hand. Width of disc on finger III 2.3 times width of adjacent phalanx. Relative lengths of appressed toes, IV > III > V > II > I. Toe I short with rounded disc; toes II, IV and V with moderately expanded discs. Toes lack webbing and lateral fringes.
Iris black.

Nominal Morph:
Ground color black, orange head mostly without black markings, narrow white band over shoulder up to the forearms, legs with dark blue reticulation.

Highland Morph:
Ground color black, orange head mostly with black markings, irregular white markings on the back, legs with white or light gray reticulation.

White-banded Morph:
Ground color black, orange head with black markings, irregular narrow white or pale yellow bands on the back, legs with white or light gray stripes.

Lowland Morph:
Ground color black, irregular white stripes on back, middorsal stripe in white on back and orange on head, legs with blue reticulation.

Reticulated Morph:
Ground color black, irregular yellow or orange lines all over the body, head and limbs, belly black-yellow blotched.

Varadero Morph:
Ground color black, orange head mostly with black markings, legs with blue or dark blue reticulation.

Diagnosis

Ranitomeya fantastica can be distinguished from the red headed morphs of Ranitomeya benedicta by its orange head instead of red in R. benedicta. It differs from the orange headed morphs of Ranitomeya benedicta by not predenting their black band which covers the eyes. It is considered a Müllerian mimic a sympatric population Ranitomeya imitator and can be distinguished from these population by its robotic movement. The banded morph of Ranitomeya fantastica differs from Ranitomeya summersi by its tricolored pattern in orange, black and blue or white grayish (instead of bicolored pattern in orange and black in R. summersi).

Size

Adult frogs are in a range between 16 and 20mm.

Sexual dimorphism

Sexual dimorphism is exhibited only by males being slightly smaller than females.

Natural history

Ranitomeya fantastica is a small shy diurnal and terrestrial or semi arboreal frog. They can be found in primary wet forests and older secondary growth where arboreal phytotelms are common. The males guard and tend the 2-5 eggs, and later transport and deposit larvae to bromeliads and tree-holes. They live according to their distribution sympatric with Ranitomeya imitator, Ranitomeya variabilis, Ameerega trivittata, A. cainarachi, A. pongoensis, A. bassleri and A. pepperi.

Ranitomeya fantastica is distributed in Peru, San Martín, Loreto in an altitude of 150-900 msnm, according to IUCN even until 1200m.

Descripción

Ranitomeya fantastica tiene una piel suave o ligeramente granular; color tierra negro; cabeza anaranjada, con o sin marcas negras, patas reticuladas blancas, grises o azules, mentón y garganta amarillas o anaranjadas.
Dedo I más corto que el dedo II cuando los dedos se presionaron; dedo III> II> IV> I. Discos en los dedos II, III y IV muy expandidos; disco en el dedo I pequeño, redondeado. Sin cintas o franjas laterales a la mano. Ancho del disco en el dedo III 2,3 veces el ancho de la falange adyacente. Longitudes relativas de los dedos de los pies, IV> III> V> II> I. Dedo corto con disco redondeado; dedos de los pies II, IV y V con discos moderadamente expandidos. Los dedos de los pies carecen de cintas y flecos laterales.
Iris negro.

Nominal Morph:
Color de tierra negro, cabeza naranja en su mayoría sin marcas negras, banda blanca estrecha sobre el hombro hasta los antebrazos, piernas con reticulación azul oscuro.

Highland Morph:
Color de tierra negro, cabeza naranja en su mayoría con marcas negras, marcas blancas irregulares en la parte posterior, patas con retícula blanca o gris claro.

Morph de bandas blancas:
Color de tierra negra, cabeza anaranjada con marcas negras, bandas angostas irregulares blancas o amarillas pálidas en la espalda, patas con rayas blancas o gris claro.

Lowland Morph:
Color de tierra negro, rayas blancas irregulares en la espalda, franja middorsal en blanco en la espalda y naranja en la cabeza, piernas con reticulación azul.

Morph reticulado:
Color de tierra negro, líneas amarillas o anaranjadas irregulares en todo el cuerpo, cabeza y extremidades, vientre negro-amarillo manchado.

Varadero Morph:
Color de tierra negro, cabeza naranja en su mayoría con marcas negras, patas con reticulación azul o azul oscuro.

Diagnosis

Ranitomeya fantastica se puede distinguir de los morfos de cabeza roja de Ranitomeya benedicta por su cabeza naranja en lugar de roja en R. benedicta. Difiere de los morfos anaranjados de Ranitomeya benedicta al no predentificar su banda negra que cubre los ojos. Se considera una mímica Mülleriana con una población simpátrica de Ranitomeya imitator y se puede distinguir de esta población por su movimiento robótico. La morfología bandeada de Ranitomeya fantastica difiere de Ranitomeya summersi por su patrón tricolor en naranja, negro y azul o blanco grisáceo (en lugar del patrón bicolor en naranja y negro en R. summersi).

Tamaño

Los adultos están en un rango de 16-20mm hocico-cloaca.

Diferencias sexuales

El dimorfismo sexual es exhibido solo por los machos ligeramente más pequeños que las hembras.

Historia natural

Ranitomeya fantastica Ranitomeya fantastica es una pequeña rana diurna y terrestre o semi arbórea tímida. Se pueden encontrar en bosques húmedos primarios y en un crecimiento secundario más antiguo donde los fitotelos arbóreos son comunes. Los machos protegen y cuidan los 2-5 huevos, y luego transportan y depositan larvas en bromelias y agujeros en los árboles. Viven según su distribución simpátrica con Ranitomeya imitator, Ranitomeya variabilis, Ameerega trivittata, A. cainarachi, A. pongoensis, A. bassleri y A. pepperi.

Beschreibung

Ranitomeya fantastica hat glatte oder leicht körnige Haut; Grundfarbe schwarz; orangefarbener Kopf, mit oder ohne schwarze Markierungen, weiße, graue oder blau retikulierte Beine, Kinn und Hals gelb oder orange.
Finger I kürzer als Finger II, wenn Finger angedrückt werden; Finger III> II> IV> I. Discs an den Fingern II, III und IV stark erweitert; Scheibe am Finger I klein, abgerundet. Keine Schwimmhäute an der Hand. Breite der Scheibe am Finger III 2,3 mal Breite der benachbarten Phalanx. Relative Länge der angedrückten Zehen, IV> III> V> II> I. Zehe I kurz mit gerundeter Scheibe; Zehen II, IV und V mit mäßig ausgedehnten Scheiben. Zehen ohne Schwimmhäute.
Iris schwarz.

Nominale Morph:
Grundfarbe schwarz, orange Kopf meist ohne schwarze Markierungen, schmales weißes Band über der Schulter bis zu den Unterarmen, Beine mit dunkelblauer Netzstruktur.

Grundfarbe schwarz, orange Kopf meist mit schwarzen Markierungen, unregelmäßige weiße Markierungen auf der Rückseite, Beine mit weißer oder hellgrauer Netzstruktur.

Weiß-banded Morph:
Grundfarbe schwarz, orangefarbener Kopf mit schwarzen Markierungen, unregelmäßige schmale weiße oder hellgelbe Streifen auf dem Rücken, Beine mit weißen oder hellgrauen Streifen.

Tiefland-Morph:
Grundfarbe schwarz, unregelmäßige weiße Streifen auf dem Rücken, Mittelstreifen in weiß auf dem Rücken und Orange auf dem Kopf, Beine mit blauer Netzstruktur.

Retikulierte Morph:
Grundfarbe schwarz, unregelmäßige gelbe oder orange Linien am ganzen Körper, Kopf und Gliedmaßen, Bauch schwarz-gelb fleckig.

Varadero Morph:
Grundfarbe schwarz, orange Kopf meist mit schwarzen Markierungen, Beine mit blauer oder dunkelblauer Netzstruktur.

Diagnose

Ranitomeya fantastica kann von den rotköpfigen Morphen von Ranitomeya benedicta durch seinen orangefarbenen Kopf anstelle von rot in R. benedicta unterschieden werden. Es unterscheidet sich von den orange gefärbten Morphen von Ranitomeya benedicta, indem es ihr schwarzes Band, das die Augen bedeckt, nicht vorführt. Es gilt als Müller-Nachahmer einer sympatrischen Ranitomeya imitator population und kann von diesen Populationen durch seine Roboterbewegung unterschieden werden. Die gebänderte Form von Ranitomeya fantastica unterscheidet sich von Ranitomeya summersi durch ihr dreifarbiges Muster in Orange, Schwarz und Blau oder Weißgrau (anstelle von zweifarbigem Muster in Orange und Schwarz bei R. summersi).

Erwachsene Tiere erreichen eine Größe von 16-20mm.

Der Geschlechtsunterschied zeigt sich nur in den etwas kleineren Männchen.

Lebensweise

Ranitomeya fantastica Ranitomeya fantastica ist ein kleiner scheuer tag- und terrestrischer oder halb-arborealer Frosch. Sie können in feuchten Primär- und und älterem Sekundärwäldern gefunden werden, wo Baumbromelien vorhanden sind. Die Männchen bewachen und pflegen die 2-5 Eier und transportieren später die Larven zu Bromelien und Baumhöhlen. Sie leben nach ihrer Verbreitung sympatrisch mit Ranitomeya imitator, Ranitomeya variabilis, Ameerega trivittata, A. cainarachi, A. pongoensis, A. bassleri und A. pepperi.
