Description

Description of the nominal morph (R. variabilis sensu Zimmermann & Zimmermann 1988) Ranitomeya variabilis has smooth skin; dorsolateral and deep green to yellow-green, with round black interlacings, a round black dot on the nose; throat light green with small black spots; posterior extremities of green color with black spots (another variant changes to blue with black spots); belly blue-green with small black spots.

Description of low morph (R. ventrimaculata sensu Schulte 1999) Slender yellow dorsolateral stripes and oblique yellow lateral stripes (in some populations are orange), the lateral and dorsolateral stripes are complete, the mediodorsal stripe ends at the level of the axilla and forms a black "Y" on the back. In some populations the dorsolateral stripe and oblique lateral stripe fuse near the axilla. Hind extremities are reticulated and vary from blue to blue-green; belly reticulated blue.

Diagnosis

Ranitomeya variabilis (nominal morph of the forest eyebrow) differs from Ranitomeya imitator because it presents only a round black spot at the tip of the nose (with two spots matched in the nose), of Ranitomeya sirensis for not having a large abdominal spot and The 'Y' shape on the back. R. ventrimaculata, R. toraro, R. uakarii and some population variations of Ranitomeya imitator for not presenting the lines understood in parallel (for presenting in the form of "Y"). R. variabilis differs from R. amazonica because of its thin dorsolateral bands.

Natural history

It is a small diurnal species. They are usually observed in the undergrowth; it is not a widely territorial species but when males perform courtship they are usually aggressive. They use canopy bromeliads as well as terrestrial bromeliads for the deposition of tadpoles. They usually carry out the procession inside the bromelia, putting of 4 to 6 eggs, that normally place it to the edge of the leaf floating on water; When the tadpoles are born they are transported by the males each towards different bromeliads. Tadpoles are omnivores, taking advantage of all the microorganisms that their phytohelm offer. This species lives in sympatry with Ranitomeya imitator in jungle brow forests and with R. amazonica, R. ventrimaculata and R. reticulata in low forests.

Descripción del morfo nominal (R. variabilis sensu Zimmermann & Zimmermann 1988) Ranitomeya variabilis tiene la piel lisa; dorso y dorsolaterales de color verde intenso al amarillo-verde, con entrelazados redondos de color negro, en la nariz presenta un punto negro de forma redonda; garganta de color verde claro con pequeños puntos negros; extremidades posteriores de color verde con manchas negras (otra variante cambia a azul con manchas negras); vientre azul-verde con pequeños puntos negros.

Descripción del morfo de selva baja (R. ventrimaculata sensu Schulte 1999) Franjas delgadas dorsolaterales amarillas y rayas oblicuas laterales amarillas (en algunas poblaciones es de color naranja), las rayas laterales y dorsolaterales están completas, la raya mediodorsal termina al nivel de la axila y forma una "Y" negra en el dorso. En algunas poblaciones la franja dorsolateral y la raya lateral oblicua se fusionan cerca de la axila. Extremidades posteriores es reticulado y varía del azul al azul-verdoso; vientre reticulado de color azul.

Diagnosis

Ranitomeya variabilis (morfo nominal de ceja de selva) se diferencia de Ranitomeya imitator por presentar solo una macha redonda negra en la punta de la nariz (con dos manchas emparejadas en la nariz), de Ranitomeya sirensis por no presentar una gran mancha abdominal y por la forma en "Y" en el dorso. De R. ventrimaculata, R. toraro, R. uakarii y de algunas variaciones poblacionales de Ranitomeya imitator por no presentar las rayas entendidas en forma paralela (por presentarlo en forma de "Y"). R. variabilis se diferencia de R. amazonica por tener las franjas dorsolaterales delgadas.

Tamaño

Los machos tienen un promedio hocico-cloaca de 17.9 mm, las hembras tienen un promedio de 20 mm.

Diferencias sexuales

El dimorfismo sexual es exhibido solo por los machos ligeramente más pequeños que las hembras.

Historia natural

Es una especie pequeña de actividad diurna. Suelen observarse en el sotobosque; no es una especie ampliamente territorial pero cuando los machos realizan el cortejo suelen ser agresivos. Utilizan bromelias de dosel tanto como bromelias terrestres para la deposición de los renacuajos. Suelen realizar el cortejo dentro de la bromelia, poniendo de 4 a 6 huevos, que suelen colocarlo al borde de la hoja flotando sobre agua; cuando nacen los renacuajos son transportados por los machos cada uno hacia diferentes bromelias. Los renacuajos son omnívoros, aprovechando todos los microorganismos que ofrecen sus fitotelmas. Esta especie vive en simpatria con Ranitomeya imitator en bosques de ceja de selva y con R. amazonica, R. ventrimaculata y R. reticulata en bosques de selva baja.

Beschreibung nominal Morph (sensu R. variabilis Zimmermann & Zimmermann 1988):
Ranitomeya variabilis hat glatte Haut; Rücken und Seiten intensiv gelb-grün, mit runden schwarzen Einschlüssen, auf der Nase gibt es einen schwarzen runden Punkt; hellgrüne Kehle mit kleinen schwarzen Flecken; Hinterbeine grün mit schwarzen Punkten (eine weitere Variante ist blau mit schwarzen Punkten); Bauch blau-grün mit kleinen schwarzen Punkten.

Beschreibung des Tieflandmorphs (R. ventrimaculata sensu Schulte 1999):
Schlanke gelbe dorsolaterale Streifen und schräge gelbe Seitenstreifen (in einigen Populationen sind sie orange), die lateralen und dorsolateralen Streifen sind vollständig, der mediodorsale Streifen endet auf der Ebene der Achselhöhle und bildet auf dem Rücken ein schwarzes "Y". In einigen Populationen verschmelzen der Dorsolateralstreifen und der schräge Seitenstreifen in der Nähe der Achselhöhle. Hinterextremitäten sind genetzt und variieren von blau bis blau-grün; Bauch blau genetzt.

Diagnose

Ranitomeya variabilis (nominal Morph - Hochlandform) unterscheidet sich von Ranitomeya imitator nur durch einen schwarzen runden Punkt auf der Nasenspitze (mit zwei paarigen Punkten auf der Vorderseite der Nase), von Ranitomeya sirensis durch das Fehlen der großen Markierung auf dem Bauch und dem "Y" auf dem Rücken. Von R. ventrimaculata, R. toraro, R. uakarii und einigen Populationen von Ranitomeya imitator durch die nicht parallel verlaufende Streifenzeichnung (anstelle dessen zeigt sich hier das "Y"). R. variabilis unterscheidet sich von R. amazonica durch die schmaleren Dorsolateralstreifen.

Größe

Die erwachsenen Männchen messen durchschnittlich 17.9 mm von der Nasenspitze bis zur Kloake, die Weibchen messen im Durchschnitt 20mm.

Geschlechtsunterschiede

Der Geschlechtsunterschied zeigt sich nur in den etwas kleineren Männchen.

Lebensweise

Ranitomeya variabilis ist eine kleine tagaktive Art. In der Regel werden sie im Unterholz gesehen; es ist keine sehr territoriale Art, aber wenn Männchen eine Balz bemerken werden sie in der Regel aggressiv. Sie benutzen sowohl Bromelien im Kronendach als auch terrestrische Bromelien für die Unterbringung der Kaulquappen. Die Balz findet in der Regel innerhalb der Bromelie statt, sie legen 4 bis 6 Eier, häufig die Kante des Blattes auf dem Wasser schwimmend; wenn die Kaulquappen schlüpfen, werden sie durch das Männchen jeweils zu unterschiedlichen Bromelien getragen. Die Kaulquappen sind Allesfresser, ein Vorteil - so können sie alle Mikroorganismen die ihre Phytotelmata bieten fressen. Diese Art lebt sympatrisch mit Ranitomeya imitator im Bergregenwald und mit R. amazonica, R. ventrimaculata und R. reticulata im Tieflandregenwald.
