Description

Excidobates captivus is a small species; smooth skin on the sides and belly, slightly granular on the back and surface of the hind limbs; back of black color with spots and dorsolateral scripts of red-orange color; present an anterior point in each eye; with yellow flashes on arms and thighs; belly black with pale yellow spots; yellow stain on chin; dark brown limbs. Circular tympanum, posterodorsally occult, no more than half of the eye; extensively expanded finger discs; the tubers are slightly to moderately elevated (Myers, 1982); teeth absent.

Diagnosis

Excidobates captivus is not to be confused because of its intense orange dots on black background with any other species in Peru. The Ecuadorian variety is with its orange-reddish brown-bold back marbled and with the bright yellow flashes on the axillas, distinguishable from other species. Excidobates captivus is distinguished from Oophaga arborea, Ranitomeya vanzolinii and Adelphobates castaneoticus by the orange dots on its back (instead of cream, yellow or white), from Excidobates mysteriosus for smaller size, smooth skin and orange dots on its back. The frogs of Ecuador are distinguished from Oophaga sylvatica and Oophaga pumilio by their bright yellow flashes on the axils, from Oophaga sylvatica and some morphs from Oophaga pumilio also by their smaller size. Excidobates captivus is distinguished from Epipedobates darwinwallacei by missing the dorsolateral stripes. It differs from Oophaga occultator by being much smaller (14.6-16.5mm vs. 24.4-26.8mm).

Size

Adult males are in a range of 14.6 to 15.4 mm snout-cloaca and females measure up to 16.5 mm snout-cloaca.

Sexual dimorphism

Sexual dimorphism is exhibited only by males being slightly smaller than females.

Natural history

Excidobates captivus is a diurnal and terrestrial species, but also climbs. They are usually found near streams where abundant heliconias grow. The reproductive cortege was observed on leaf litter; then the males transport the tadpoles to the heliconias (Twomey & Brown, 2008) which are almost at ground level. This species is sympatric with Ranitomeya variabilis, which is an arboreal species, thus there is no competition for phytotelmatas, each species being adapted to a type of host plant.

Note

Like other species they are also animals without permission in private hands. Smuggling still is a big problem in Peru, Ecuador and Colombia.

Descripción

Excidobates captivus es una especie pequeña; piel lisa en los costados y vientre, ligeramente granular en el dorso y la superficie de las extremidades posteriores; dorso de color negro con puntos y guiones dorsolaterales de color rojo-anaranjado; presentan un punto anterior en cada ojo; con destellos amarillo en brazos y muslos; vientre de color negro con manchas amarillo pálido; mancha en la barbilla de color amarillo; miembros de color marrón oscuro. Tímpano circular, oculto posterodorsalmente, tamaño no más de la mitad del ojo; discos de los dedos ampliamente expandidos; los tubérculos son ligeramente a moderadamente elevado (Myers, 1982); dientes ausentes.

Diagnosis

No se puede confundir Excidobates captivus por causa de los puntos naranjas intensos en fondo negro con cualquier otra especie en Perú. La variedad del Ecuador es con su dorso naranja-rojito marrón-negrito marmorado y con los destellos amarillos brillantes en las axillas, diferenciable de otras especies. Excidobates captivus se distingue de Oophaga arborea, Ranitomeya vanzolinii y Adelphobates castaneoticus por los puntos naranjas en su espalda (en lugar de crema, amarillos o blancos), de Excidobates mysteriosus por el tamaño más pequeño, la piel lisa y los puntos naranjas en su espalda. Las ranas del Ecuador se distinguen de Oophaga sylvatica y Oophaga pumilio por sus destellos amarillos brillantes en las axillas, de Oophaga sylvatica y unos morfos de Oophaga pumilio por su tamaño más pequeño. Excidobates captivus se distingue de Epipedobates darwinwallacei por falta de las rayas dorsolaterales. Difiere de Oophaga occultator por ser mucho más pequeño (14.6-16.5mm vs. 24.4-26.8mm).

Tamaño

Los machos adultos se encuentran en un rango de 14.6 to 15.4 mm hocico-cloaca y las hembras miden hasta 16.5 mm hocico-cloaca.

Diferencias sexuales

El dimorfismo sexual es exhibido solo por los machos ligeramente más pequeños que las hembras.

Historia natural

Es una especie de actividad diurna, terrestre pero también escala. Se las encuentra usualmente cerca de arroyos donde crecen abundantes heliconias. Se observó el cortejo reproductivo sobre hojarasca; luego los machos transportan los renacuajos hacia las heliconias (Twomey & Brown, 2008) que se encuentran casi al nivel del suelo. Esta especie es simpatrica con Ranitomeya variabilis, la cual es una especie arbórea, así no existe competencia por las fitotelmatas, adaptándose cada especie a un tipo de planta hospedera.

Beschreibung

Excidobates captivus ist eine kleine Art; glatte Haut an den Seiten und Bauch, leicht körnig auf dem Rücken und Oberfläche der Hinterbeine; Rücken schwarz, mit rot-orangen Punkten und Strichen; vor jedem Auge einen vorderen Punkt darstellen; mit gelben Signalflecken an Armen und Oberschenkeln; Bauch schwarz mit blassgelben Flecken; Fleck auf dem Kinn gelb; dunkelbraune Gliedmaßen. Kreisförmiges Tympanon, Größe weniger als die Hälfte des Auges; weit ausgedehnte Fingerscheiben; die Tuberkel sind leicht bis mäßig erhöht (Myers, 1982); Zähne fehlen

Diagnose

Excidobates captivus ist aufgrund der intensiven orangen Punkte auf schwarzem Grund mit keiner anderen Art in Peru zu verwechseln. Die Variante aus Ecuador, ist mit seinem orangeroten/braunschwarz marmorierten Rücken mit gelben Signalflecken auch gut von anderen unterscheidbar. Excidobates captivus unterscheidet sich von Oophaga arborea, Ranitomeya vanzolinii und Adelphobates castaneoticus durch die orangenen Punkte auf dem Rücken (anstatt cremefarbenen, gelben oder weißen), von Excidobates mysteriosus durch die Größe, die glatte Haut und die orangenen Punkte auf dem Rücken (anstatt weißen), von Excidobates condor durch die glatte Haut und die orangenen Punkte auf dem Rücken. Die Tiere aus Ecuador unterscheiden sich von Oophaga sylvatica und Oophaga pumilio durch die deutlichen Signalflecken in den Achseln. Excidobates captivus unterscheidet sich von Epipedobates darwinwallacei durch die fehlenden Dorsolateralstreifen. Es unterscheidet sich vom Oophaga occultator durch seine viel geringere Größe (14,6-16,5 mm vs. 24,4-26,8 mm).

Größe

Erwachsene Männchen liegen in einem Bereich von 14.6 bis 15.4 mm, Weibchen bis 16.5 mm.

Geschlechtsunterschiede

Der Geschlechtsunterschied zeigt sich nur in den etwas kleineren Männchen.

Lebensweise

Excidobates captivus eine tagaktive, bodenbewohnende Art die aber auch klettert. Sie werden in der Regel in der Nähe von Bächen gefunden, wo reichlich Heliconien wachsen. Das Fortpflanzungsverhalten wurde in der Laubschicht beobachtet; später transportieren die Männchen die Kaulquappen zu den Heliconien (Twomey & Brown, 2008) fast auf Bodenhöhe. Diese Art lebt sympatrisch mit Ranitomeya variabilis, einer baumbewohnenden Art, und nicht mit dieser im Wettbewerb um Phytotelmata steht, jede Art ist an eine Wirtspflanze adaptiert.
