Description

Ranitomeya sirensis is a small frog, slightly granulated skin.

Nominal Morph:
The head and dorsum are red and lack spots or stripes. The arms and legs are turquoise. However the coloration is lighter on the anterodorsal side of the proximal half of the upper arm and on the proximal part of the thigh extending to the body. The venter is turquoise-green or gray with a five by three mm red patch on the belly. The area below the rectangular patch and on the ventral surface of the legs are turquoise. The surface of the palms and soles are black. Iris is black (Aichinger 1991).

'Tingo Maria' Morph:
Ground color black, yellow stripes, blue legs.

Panguana Morph:
Ground color black, yellow, green, orange, or red stripes, grayish or pale yellow legs.

"Biolat" Morph:
Ground color black, small yellow stripes, middorsal stripe often pale yellow, pale blue or grayish; grayish or pale blue legs. Smallest morph

Size

Small sized frog. Adult males measure about 15-22mm, depending on its distribution. Females are slightly larger.

Sexual dimorphism

Sexual dimorphism is exhibited only by males being slightly smaller than females.

Natural history

Ranitomeya sirensis can be found breeding in bamboo stands, Xanthosoma and Heliconia plants.

Geografic distribution

Ranitomeya sirensis is distributed in Peru (Loreto, San Martín, Ucayali, Pasco, Junín, Huánuco, Cusco, Madre de Dios), Brazil (State of Acre) and Bolivia (Department of Pando) at elevations between 150 and 1560m.

Conservation Status

LC - least concern
Smugglers have been hitting some populations hard for several years and appear to have made a significant negative impact on wild populations.

Note

In 2011 R.biolat and R.lamasi were synonymized with R.sirensis (Brown & Twomey). The species is named after the type locality, Serranía de Sira (Aichinger 1991).
