Ameerega flavopicta Lutz, 1925 - Bolivia, Brazil

Description

Ameerega flavopicta is a medium-sized frog with finely granulated skin. Discs of small hands and feet, first finger slightly longer than the second. The back has a deep black coloration with bright yellow round spots often arranged in two longitudinal rows; it has deep black flanks and few bright yellow round spots; two bright yellow dorsolateral bands that extend from the tip of the muzzle to the groin; dorsolateral stripes ranging from orange to red flash marks that extend along the front, top and back of the thigh surfaces; also flashes orange to red in the proximal half of the surfaces of the tibia and behind the armpits; upper surfaces of the extremities of deep black with gloss.

Diagnosis

Ameerega flavopicta is distinguished from Ameerega braccata, Ameerega hahneli and Ameerega picta by the presence of yellow spots on the flanks and upper surfaces of the limbs, as the tympanum is relatively long, and because of its larger size. It is also distinguished from A. braccata by having the back and limbs black (instead of dark brown) and having smaller eyes; with Ameerega hahneli also by the biggest flash marks in the groin, by having yellow dorsolateral stripes (instead it is white), by the lack of blue marble in the belly, by presenting yellow dots in the back, and by having smaller eyes; Ameerega picta also for having the back and limbs black and for the lack of blue marble in the belly.

Size

Adult males are in a range of 20.7 to 24.7 mm of snout-cloaca length and females with a measurement of 23.4 to 35.4 mm larger than males.

Sexual dimorphism

Sexual dimorphism is only exhibited by males because they are smaller than females.

Natural history

Ameerega flavopicta is a species of diurnal activity, usually found in rocky fields in the cracks of rocks or riparian forests along streams, and in the middle of the leaf litter. Males usually make call away from the banks of streams; according to Lima & Eterovick (2013), observed that the call sites of the males were in termite nests located at the edge of the forest away from the water. The males can carry 18 tadpoles on the back to the streams.

Geografic distribution

It is widely distributed in the Brazilian states of Minas Gerais in the south, Goiás and Tocantins in the southeast of Brazil, Pará in the north and Maranhão in the northeast, and has been registered in five localities in the eastern cordilleras of Bolivia. Altitude of 400 to 1500 masl.

Geografische Verbreitung
