Hyloxalus mystax Duellmann & Simmons, 1988 - Ecuador

Description

Hyloxalus mystax is a very small to small cryptic species. Skin on dorsum and hind limbs weakly granular; skin on ventral surfaces smooth. Oblique lateral stripe absent; ventrolateral stripe absent; dorsolateral stripe absent. Dorsum tan brown to dull orange with brown or black bars on hind limbs; flanks dark brown; belly cream to yellow with brown spots; upper lip white or yellow. Disc on Finger III expanded; length of Finger I = II; disc on toe IV expanded; toe webbing absent.

Diagnosis

Many cryptic species of the genera Allobates, Anomaloglossus, Aromobates, Colostethus, Ectopoglossus, Hyloxalus and Silverstoneia are extremely difficult to distinguish externally from each other, both within the genus and across genera. A differentiation from similar species is also complicated by the large number of these species, unknown distribution patterns and undescribed species. The call is often the surest way to accurately determine. Unfortunately, most of the species lack a recording and a description of the call is only available in a few cases.
Hyloxalus mystax is distinguishable from Hyloxalus pumilus by the absence of ill-defined dorsolateral folds, and by its larger size.
(see note)

Size

Adult males are in a range of 19.5-21.5 mm (n=3) of snout-cloaca length and females with a measurement of 19.2-21.8 mm (n=3) larger than males.

Sexual dimorphism

Sexual dimorphism is exhibited by males being slightly smaller and slimmer than females. The males differ from females by having pronounced black stippling on the throat.

Call

The call is a rapid series of chirps.

Natural history

Little is known about the way of life of Hyloxalus mystax.
Other species of the genus Hyloxalus are diurnal frogs of the leaf litter, have large clutches which are laid on the ground, the males guard the eggs and transport the tadpoles in larger groups or all together to puddles or small streams where they complete their development.
It occurs sympatrically with Hyloxalus exasperatus and Hyloxalus shuar.

Geografic distribution

Hyloxalus mystax is distributed in Ecuador (Morona Santiago, Zamora Chinchipe) at an elevation of ~1830 meters above sea level.

DD - Data deficient

Note

The name "mystax" means mustache, refering to the dark brown longitudial mark on the anterior part of the upper lip. It could be conspecific with Hyloxalus pumilus.
