Description

Small species, has smooth dorsal skin; the discs of the finger II and IV very expanded, the finger I is shorter than the finger II; moderately expanded III and V toes disks, absent toe tissue; premaxillary teeth and absent jaws. The dorsolateral stripes vary from red to orange, extending to the upper thigh (absent in the "Arena blanca" morph), there are also individuals with dorsolateral yellow stripes. The well defined black "Y" with the two ends ending on the eyelids (absent in the "Arena blanca" morph), black spot on the snout (not present in some individuals); yellow labial line; yellow side strip (absent in the "Arena blanca" morph). Surface of the hind limbs and black belly with cross-links ranging from deep blue, dark blue or gray; bright throat yellow or orange, with irregular black edges.

Diagnosis

Ranitomeya amazonica differs from Ranitomeya variabilis "Lowland morph" because it presents a lateral fringe that does not merge near the armpit and have wide dorsolateral bands; from Ranitomeya ventrimaculata for presenting dorsal black Y-shaped strips (U-shaped) and presenting lateral fringe (no lateral fringe). The "Arena blanca" morph differs from Ranitomeya reticulata because it usually has a bright orange to red back with irregular black markings.

Size

Adult males are in a range of 16 to 18 mm snout-cloaca and females measure a range of 17.37 to 19 mm snout-cloaca.

Sexual dimorphism is exhibited only by males being slightly smaller than females.

Natural history

It is a small species of daytime activity, usually related to canopy bromeliads. For reproduction and feeding they go down to the underbrush, juveniles are usually on the litter or fallen logs. The courtship takes place when the male calls to the female, which is a block of repeated buzz; deposits a clutch of 4 to 6 eggs, glued to the base of bromelia leaves, on the water; when the tadpoles are born, the male is responsible for transporting them to individual plantlets to avoid possible cannibalism. The reproduction is asymmetric, where the male takes care of the young and protects its territory, whereas the females are free in the forest. The tadpoles are black, feeding on larvae of mosquitoes and detritus.

Note

Ranitomeya amazonica is the sister species of Ranitomeya variabilis, both belonging to the variabilis group, with similar reproductive strategies and black tadpoles. The morph "Arena blanca" is believed to be a variant that has opted for müllerian mimicry because it is in sympatry with Ranitomeya reticulata, being a population located only in Loreto-Peru.

Descripción

Especie pequeña, tiene la piel dorsal lisa; los discos del dedo de la mano II y IV muy expandidos, el dedo I es más corto que el dedo II; los discos del dedo de los pies III y V moderadamente expandidos, tejido del dedo del pie ausente; dientes premaxilares y maxilares ausentes. Las rayas dorsolaterales varían de color rojo a naranja, extendiéndose hasta la parte superior del muslo (ausentes en el morfo "arena blanca"), también existen individuos con las rayas dorsolaterales de color amarillo. La "Y" negra bien definida con los dos extremos que terminan sobre los parpados (ausentes en el morfo "arena blanca"), punto negro en el hocico (no presente en algunos individuos); línea labial de color amarillo; franja lateral de color amarillo (ausentes en el morfo "arena blanca"). Superficie de las extremidades posteriores y vientre negro con reticulaciones que varían desde el azul intenso, azul oscuro o gris; garganta brillante de color amarillo o naranja, con los bordes negros irregulares.

Diagnosis

Ranitomeya amazónica se diferencia de Ranitomeya variabilis "Morfo de selva baja" por presentar una franja lateral que no llega a fusionarse cerca de la axila y tener franjas dorsolaterales anchos; de Ranitomeya ventrimaculata por presentar rayas negras dorsales en forma de "Y" (en forma de "U") y presentar franja lateral (no presenta franja lateral). El morfo "arena blanca", se diferencia de Ranitomeya reticulata por presentar generalmente un dorso anaranjado brillante a rojo con marcas negras irregulares.

Tamaño

Los machos adultos se encuentran en un rango de 16 a 18 mm de longitud hocico-cloaca y las hembras con una medida de 17.37 a 19 mm.

Diferencias sexuales

El dimorfismo sexual es exhibido solo por los machos ligeramente más pequeños que las hembras.

Historia natural

Es una especie pequeña de actividad diurna, suelen estar relacionados a bromelias de dosel. Para la reproducción y alimentación bajan hasta el sotobosque, los juveniles suelen estar sobre la hojarasca o troncos caídos. El cortejo se desarrolla cuando el macho hace el canto de llamado a la hembra, el cual es un bloque de buzz repetido; depositan un embrague de 4 a 6 huevos, pegados a la base de las hojas de la bromelia, sobre el agua; cuando los renacuajos nacen, el macho se encarga de transportarlos hasta fitotelmas individuales para evitar un posible canibalismo. La reproducción es asimétrica, donde el macho cuida de las crías y protege su territorio, en cambio las hembras están libres en el bosque. Los renacuajos son de color negro, se alimentan de larvas de zancudos y detritus.

Ranitomeya amazonica es la especie hermana de Ranitomeya variabilis, perteneciendo ambos al grupo variabilis, con estrategias reproductivas similar y renacuajos negros. El morfo "arena blanca", se cree que es una variante que ha optado por el mimetismo mulleriano por estar en simpatria con Ranitomeya reticulata, siendo una población ubicada solo en Loreto-Perú.

Beschreibung

Es ist eine kleine Art mit glatter Rückenhaut; Scheiben der Finger II und IV stark erweitert, Finger I kürzer ist als Finger II; Scheiben der Zehe III und V mäßig erweitert, keine Spannhäute; Maxillar- und Prämaxillarzähne fehlen. Die dorsolateralen Streifen variieren von rot bis orange und erstrecken sich bis zum Oberschenkel (fehlen beim "Arena blanca" Morph), es gibt auch Tiere mit gelben Dorsolateralstreifen. Das gut definierte schwarze "Y" mit den beiden Enden endet auf den Augenlidern (fehlt beim "Arena blanca" Morph), schwarzer Fleck auf der Schnauze (bei einigen Individuen nicht vorhanden); gelbe labiale Linie; gelber Seitenstreifen (abwesend beim "Arena Blanca" Morph). Oberfläche der hinteren Gliedmaßen und Bauch schwarz Netzeichnung die von intensiv blau, dunkelblau bis grau variiert; Kehle leuchtend gelb oder orange, mit unregelmäßigem schwarzen Rand.

Diagnose

Ranitomeya amazonica unterscheidet sich von Ranitomeya variabilis "Tieflanfmorph" durch den seitlichen Streifen der nicht bis in die Achsel reicht und durch die breiten dorsolateralen Streifen, von Ranitomeya ventrimaculata zur den dorsalen schwarzen Y-förmigen Streifen (anstatt U-förmig) und dem vorhandensein des Seitenstreifens. Der "Arena blanca" Morph unterscheidet sich von Ranitomeya reticulata durch die normalerweise hellorange bis rote Rückseite mit unregelmäßigen schwarzen Markierungen.

Größe

Die erwachsenen Männchen messen zwischen 16-18mm von der Nasenspitze bis zur Kloake, die Weibchen sind mit 17.37 bis 19mm größer als die Männchen.

Geschlechtsunterschiede

Der Geschlechtsunterschied zeigt sich nur in den etwas kleineren Männchen.

Lebensweise

Es ist eine kleine tagaktive Art deren Verbreitung in der Regel im Zusammenhang mit Bromelien in den Baumkronen steht. Für die Reproduktion und zum Fressen gehen sie hinunter zum Unterholz, Jungtiere sind gewöhnlich in der Laubschicht oder auf oder gefallenen Stämmen. Die Balz beginnt, wenn das Männchen das Weibchen ruft, der ruf besteht aus einem Block von sich wiederholendem Summen; Legt 4-6 Eier und klebt diese an Bromelienblätter oberhalb des Wasserspiegels. Wenn die Kaulquappen schlüpfen, ist das Männchen für den Transport zu einzelnen Phytotelmata verantwortlich um einen möglichen Kannibalismus zu vermeiden. Die Reproduktion ist asymmetrisch: das Männchen kümmert sich um die Brut und schützt sein Gebiet, während die Weibchen ohne Revier frei im Wald leben. Kaulquappen sind schwarz und ernähren sich von Mückenlarven und Detritus.

Ranitomeya amazonica ist die Schwesterart von Ranitomeya variabilis, die beide zur Variabilis-Gruppe gehören, mit ähnlichen Fortpflanzungsstrategien und schwarzen Kaulquappen. Die Morph "Arena Blanca" ist vermutlich eine Variante, die Müllersche Mimikri zeigt, weil sie mit Ranitomeya reticulata sympathrisch ist und eine Population bildet, die man nur in Loreto-Peru findet.
